{"projectrec":{"ProID":3813,"StandardTitle":"The impact of the invasive comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi in the North Sea","OrigTitle":"De impact van de invasieve kamkwal Mnemiopsis leidyi in de Noordzee","Acronym":null,"AbstractEnglish":"Although the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS) is a very well studied ecosystem, the knowledge on jellyfish and more specifically ctenophores is poorly documented. Zooplankton research in the BPNS shows that several ctenophore species are facilitated by higher summer and autumn water temperatures. Recently it became obvious that these ‘primitive’ invertebrates are able to alter and control complete food webs. \r\nThe American comb jelly, Mnemiopsis leidyi, is one of the most notorious invasive species in the world. It caused massive ecological and economical damage to the Black Sea ecosystem. In 2007, it was observed for the first time in the BPNS. \r\nTo assess the impact of M. leidyi on different human activities (fisheries, energy providing industries and tourism) a detailed study will be carried out on the spatial and temporal distribution and the role of M. leidyi in the food web of the BPNS and the Westerschelde estuary. A Standard Operational Protocol (SOP) for sampling, conserving and fixating these fragile organisms for different analysing purposes, will be further developed. \r\nMnemiopsis leidyi is known to predate on fish eggs and larvae, and zooplankton. As such, it can be seen as a potential competitor and predator of zooplanktivorous fish. The position of M. leidyi in the food web will be assessed using stable isotopes and fatty acid analyses, and through the use of a genetic probe to identify M. leidyi at a larger North Sea & North Atlantic Ocean scale. \r\nThe obtained information will be useful to formulate national and international policy advice towards various sectors, including fisheries, energy providers and tourism.","AbstractOtherLang":"Hoewel het Belgische deel van de Noordzee (BDNZ) een zeer goed bestudeerd ecosysteem is, blijkt de kennis van de kwallen, en kamkwallen in het bijzonder, weinig gedocumenteerd. Zoöplanktononderzoek in het BDNZ wees op hoge densiteiten aan verschillende soorten kamkwallen bij hoge zomer en herfst zeewatertemperaturen. Recent werd aangetoond dat deze ‘primitieve’ ongewervelden het voedselweb in de zee drastisch kunnen veranderen en overnemen. \r\n\r\nEén van de meest gevreesde invasieve soorten ter wereld is de Amerikaanse kamkwal, Mnemiopsis leidyi, die massale ecologische en economische schade heeft aangericht in de Zwarte Zee. In 2007 is deze soort ook in het Belgische Deel van de Noordzee aangetroffen. \r\n\r\nOm de impact van M. leidyi op verschillende menselijke activiteiten (visserij, energieleveranciers en toerisme) te onderzoeken, zal de ruimtelijke en temporele spreiding en de rol van M. leidyi in het voedselweb van het BDNZ en het Westerschelde estuarium worden bepaald. Een Standaard Operationeel Protocol (SOP) voor het bemonsteren, bewaren en fixeren van deze fragiele organismen voor verschillende analysedoeleinden, zal verder worden ontwikkeld. \r\n\r\nMnemiopsis leidyi heeft een weinig selectief dieet dat vooral bestaat uit zoöplankton, waaronder viseieren en -larven en vormt zo een potentiële competitor en predator van zoöplanktivore vissen. De positie van M. leidyi in het voedselweb zal worden bepaald met behulp van stabiele isotopen en vetzuuranalyses en door gebruik te maken van een genetische probe om M. leidyi te identificeren op grote schaal (Noordzee & Noord-Atlantische oceaan). \r\nUiteindelijk zal op basis van deze gegevens informatie worden aangeleverd voor het formuleren van nationaal en internatinoaal beleidsgerichte adviezen ten behoeve van verschillende sectoren waaronder de visserij, de energiesector en het toerisme.","DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-05-06 10:25:46.257000","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+00:00"},"ParentProID":null,"BeginYear":2011,"EndYear":2014,"BMonth":1,"EMonth":12,"BeginMonth":"January","EndMonth":"December","OrigTitleLangCode":null,"OrigTitleLangID":null,"OrigTitleLangNL":null,"OrigTitleLang":null,"OtherAbstractLangCode":"nl","OtherAbstractLangID":41,"OtherAbstractLang":"Dutch","OtherAbstractLangNL":"Nederlands","Progress":"Completed","ProgressNL":"Afgelopen","PublicFlag":1,"CheckedFlag":0,"ND":"2011-01-13","UD":"2015-01-28","DMPFlag":0,"Budget":null,"BudgetCurrency":"EUR"},"parent":null,"persons":null,"projects":null,"events":null,"datasets":null,"institutes":[{"instituterec":{"Acronym":"ILVO","ProPartID":12529,"PublicFlag":1,"OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullOrigName":"Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food","Line1":"Burgemeester Van Gansberghelaan 92","Line2":"9820 Merelbeke","Line3":null,"Line4":null,"InsID":5442,"FullStandardName":"Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek","Role":null,"RoleID":null,"EncAddress":"Burgemeester Van Gansberghelaan 92, 9820 Merelbeke, Belgium"},"parent":null,"institutes":null,"references":null,"conferences":null,"datasets":null,"persons":[{"Surname":"Hostens","Firstname":"Kristian (Kris)","Initials":"K.","LeaderFlag":0,"PersID":226,"Role":"Co-promotor","RoleID":15,"PastInstitute":0,"BeginDay":null,"BeginMonth":null,"BeginYear":null,"EndDay":null,"EndMonth":null,"EndYear":null},{"Surname":"Vansteenbrugge","Firstname":"Lies","Initials":"L.","LeaderFlag":0,"PersID":23823,"Role":null,"RoleID":null,"PastInstitute":null,"BeginDay":null,"BeginMonth":null,"BeginYear":null,"EndDay":null,"EndMonth":null,"EndYear":null}],"pastpers":null,"subpers":null,"projects":null,"urls":null,"pictures":null,"published":null,"affrefs":null,"collections":null,"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"thestermsFRIS":null,"nXtins":null,"previns":null,"spcols":null,"resmessage":"no id specified","complete":0,"participantrec":null,"peerrevs":null,"urlmaps":null},{"instituterec":{"Acronym":"MARBIOL","ProPartID":12530,"PublicFlag":1,"OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullOrigName":"Ghent University; Faculty of Sciences; Biology Department; Marine Biology Section","Line1":"Campus De Sterre, S8","Line2":"Krijgslaan 281","Line3":"9000 Gent","Line4":null,"InsID":13,"FullStandardName":"Universiteit Gent; Faculteit Wetenschappen; Vakgroep Biologie; Onderzoeksgroep Mariene Biologie","Role":null,"RoleID":null,"EncAddress":"Campus De Sterre, S8, Krijgslaan 281, 9000 Gent, Belgium"},"parent":null,"institutes":null,"references":null,"conferences":null,"datasets":null,"persons":[{"Surname":"Vincx","Firstname":"Magda","Initials":"M.","LeaderFlag":0,"PersID":19,"Role":"Promotor","RoleID":8,"PastInstitute":1,"BeginDay":null,"BeginMonth":null,"BeginYear":null,"EndDay":null,"EndMonth":null,"EndYear":null}],"pastpers":null,"subpers":null,"projects":null,"urls":null,"pictures":null,"published":null,"affrefs":null,"collections":null,"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"thestermsFRIS":null,"nXtins":null,"previns":null,"spcols":null,"resmessage":"no id specified","complete":0,"participantrec":null,"peerrevs":null,"urlmaps":null}],"refs":null,"urls":[{"URL":"https://www.vliz.be/vmdcdata/midas/cruise.php?thiscamp=89","externalID":null,"URLTypeCode":null,"URLType":"Online dataset","URLTypID":19},{"URL":"www.ilvo.vlaanderen.be/Default.aspx?alias=www.ilvo.vlaanderen.be/memo","externalID":null,"URLTypeCode":null,"URLType":"Project home page","URLTypID":9}],"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"funderids":null,"othtermsFRIS":null,"pictures":[],"spcols":null,"resmessage":"","complete":1}
