Hij kwam daar wellicht terecht via het ballastwater van schepen. In 2009 werd deze soort ook voor het eerst verder van de kust aangetroffen gedurende één van de maandelijkse zoöplankton-staalnames van ILVO-onderzoeker Karl Van Ginderdeuren. Gezien de grote economische en ecologische impact van M. leidyi in de Zwarte Zee, drong onderzoek naar deze soort in het Belgische deel van de Noordzee zich op. Deze kwallen voeden zich immers met de larven van economisch belangrijke vrijzwemmende vissoorten. Bovendien plant deze kamkwal zich zeer snel voort, wat de potentiële schade nog aanzienlijker maakt.\r\n\r\nIn januari 2011 ging het MEMO-project van start met ILVO-Visserij als projectcoördinator. Dit project maakt deel uit van het Interreg IV A ‘2 zeeën’-programma en zorgt voor een internationale samenwerking tussen onderzoekers uit België, Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië en Nederland.\r\n\r\nMEMO bestaat uit drie hoofdactiviteiten. Gedurende de eerste activiteit zal de ruimtelijke en temporele verspreiding van Mnemiopsis leidyi in de 2 zeeën-regio (Kanaal en Zuidelijke Noordzee) worden bepaald. Op basis van de verzamelde biologische data en omgevingsparameters zal een habitatmodel worden ontwikkeld. De tweede activiteit is toegespitst op op de biologie, fysiologie en het dieet van M. leidyi. Via prooi-predator interacties zal een levenscyclus-model worden opgesteld. Om ecologische en socio-economische impacts te voorspellen, zal voor de derde activiteit een toegepast geïntegreerd plankton-ecosysteem model worden ontwikkeld.\r\n\r\nBinnen het MEMO-project zal het ILVO vooral een grote rol spelen in de ontwikkeling van een Standaard Operationeel Protocol (SOP). Dat moet toelaten om M. leidyi op een efficiënte manier te vangen, bewaren en identificeren. Daarnaast wordt ook een genetische probe ontwikkeld, die een correcte identificatie zal bevorderen.","DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-05-06
