    {"projectrec":{"ProID":4088,"StandardTitle":"The effect of ocean acidification on the benthic ecosystem","OrigTitle":null,"Acronym":null,"AbstractEnglish":"The increasing emission of CO2 to the atmosphere resulted in many problems related to climate change. However, a lot of this CO2 is taken up the worlds’ oceans, partly mitigating the problems caused by increased concentrations of CO2¨in the atmosphere. However, the uptake of CO2 has lead to a reduction in pH of about 0.1 pH levels compared to pre-industrial times. As atmospheric CO2 concentrations are projected to double over the next century, an addition decline in pH by 0.3-0.4 pH units is predicted. In coastal seas, the pH decline was shown to be an order of magnitude higher. This process is called ocean acidification (OA) and is now often referred to as “the other problem” as this process has important negative consequences for calcifying (e.g. coral reefs, coccoliths, foraminifera and bivalves) and and non-calcifying organisms (e.g. diatoms, nitrifiers, and heterotrophic bacteria). Research on the effects of OA focuses generally on the pelagic realm, while research on the effects of OA on the seafloor ecosystem is still in its infancy. Up to now, only three papers are available, and all of these papers suggest a negative effect of OA on benthic ecosystem functioning. However, the range of experimental evidence is too limited to draw general conclusion as yet.","AbstractOtherLang":"De toenemende uitstoot van CO2 in de atmosfeer zorgde reeds voor klimaatsverandering. Maar een groot deel van deze CO2 wordt opgenomen door de oceanen. Op die manier wordt de klimaatsverandering wat getemperd. Anderzijds heeft deze opname van CO2 geleid tot een daling in de pH van zeewater met ongeveer 0.1 pH eenheden in vergelijking met het pre-industriële tijdperk. Gezien de atmosferische CO2  concentraties verwacht worden te verdubbelen in de volgende eeuw, wordt een extra daling in de pH van 0.3-0.4 eenheden voorspeld. In kustzeeën blijkt deze daling nog een grootte-orde hoger te liggen. Dit proces wordt verzuring van de zee  genoemd en is nu gekend als “het ander CO2 probleem” omdat dit proces negatieve gevolgen heeft voor zowel organismen die kalkskeletjes vormen (koralen, coccolithofore, foraminiferen en bivalven) en organismen die dat niet doen (diatomeën, nitrificerende en heterotrofe bacteriën). Onderzoek naar de effecten van oceaanverzuring focust voornamelijk op het pelagische ecosysteem, terwijl het onderzoek naar de effecten van oceaanverzuring op het zeebodemecosysteem nog in haar kinderschoenen staat. Tot op heden zijn er slechts 3 papers gepubliceerd en in alledrie wordt een negatief effect van oceaanverzuring op benthisch ecosysteem functioneren gesuggereerd. De bewijzen van deze experimenten zijn echter nog te zwak om sterke algemene conclusies te trekken.","DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-05-06 10:25:46.257000","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+00:00"},"ParentProID":null,"BeginYear":null,"EndYear":null,"BMonth":null,"EMonth":null,"BeginMonth":null,"EndMonth":null,"OrigTitleLangCode":null,"OrigTitleLangID":null,"OrigTitleLangNL":null,"OrigTitleLang":null,"OtherAbstractLangCode":"nl","OtherAbstractLangID":41,"OtherAbstractLang":"Dutch","OtherAbstractLangNL":"Nederlands","Progress":null,"ProgressNL":null,"PublicFlag":1,"CheckedFlag":0,"ND":"2012-08-27","UD":"2012-08-27","DMPFlag":0,"Budget":null,"BudgetCurrency":"EUR"},"parent":null,"persons":null,"projects":null,"events":null,"datasets":null,"institutes":[{"instituterec":{"Acronym":"GEMS int NV","ProPartID":13196,"PublicFlag":1,"OrigNameLangCode":null,"OrigNameLangID":null,"FullOrigName":"Geotechnical Engineering and Marine Surveys","Line1":"Pathoekeweg 9b04","Line2":"8000 Brugge","Line3":null,"Line4":null,"InsID":5207,"FullStandardName":"GEMS International nv","Role":"Sponsor","RoleID":3,"EncAddress":"Pathoekeweg 9b04, 8000 Brugge, Belgium"},"parent":null,"institutes":null,"references":null,"conferences":null,"datasets":null,"persons":[],"pastpers":null,"subpers":null,"projects":null,"urls":null,"pictures":null,"published":null,"affrefs":null,"collections":null,"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"thestermsFRIS":null,"nXtins":null,"previns":null,"spcols":null,"resmessage":"no id specified","complete":0,"participantrec":null,"peerrevs":null,"urlmaps":null},{"instituterec":{"Acronym":"MARBIOL","ProPartID":13197,"PublicFlag":1,"OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullOrigName":"Ghent University; Faculty of Sciences; Biology Department; Marine Biology Section","Line1":"Campus De Sterre, S8","Line2":"Krijgslaan 281","Line3":"9000 Gent","Line4":null,"InsID":13,"FullStandardName":"Universiteit Gent; Faculteit Wetenschappen; Vakgroep Biologie; Onderzoeksgroep Mariene Biologie","Role":null,"RoleID":null,"EncAddress":"Campus De Sterre, S8, Krijgslaan 281, 9000 Gent, Belgium"},"parent":null,"institutes":null,"references":null,"conferences":null,"datasets":null,"persons":[{"Surname":"Braeckman","Firstname":"Ulrike","Initials":"U.","LeaderFlag":0,"PersID":10599,"Role":null,"RoleID":null,"PastInstitute":0,"BeginDay":null,"BeginMonth":null,"BeginYear":null,"EndDay":null,"EndMonth":null,"EndYear":null}],"pastpers":null,"subpers":null,"projects":null,"urls":null,"pictures":null,"published":null,"affrefs":null,"collections":null,"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"thestermsFRIS":null,"nXtins":null,"previns":null,"spcols":null,"resmessage":"no id specified","complete":0,"participantrec":null,"peerrevs":null,"urlmaps":null}],"refs":null,"urls":[{"URL":"https://www.vliz.be/vmdcdata/midas/cruise.php?thiscamp=101","externalID":null,"URLTypeCode":null,"URLType":"Online dataset","URLTypID":19}],"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"funderids":null,"othtermsFRIS":null,"pictures":[],"spcols":null,"resmessage":"","complete":1}
