Biodiversity responses will be analysed in terms of changes in abundances and diversity of zooplankton communities and (sub)populations of one or a few selected key species (e.g., calanoid copepods). Furthermore, functional biodiversity and the role of climate factors, nutrients and pollutants thereupon, will be investigated by biochemical profiling (fatty acids) of these key species as they play a pivotal role in the energy exchange between primary producers and higher trophic levels.\r\nTo adequately document the responses of zooplankton to environmental factors, monitoring with a high efficiency, high accuracy and high spatial-temporal resolution is required. The main tools for this study will therefore include a Video Plankton Recorder (VPR) in combination with a Zooplankton Scanner (ZooScan). A first phase of the research will be dedicated to the standardisation and optimalisation of these instruments for the study area and the local zooplankton communities.","AbstractOtherLang":"Door een integratieve en interdisciplinaire benadering die de onderzoeksdomeinen mariene biologie en ecotoxicologie combineert, heeft dit doctoraatsonderzoek als doel de relatieve bijdrage van de verschillende veranderende milieuomstandigheden en polluenten op de ruimtelijk-termporele dynamiek van de abundaties en diversiteit van zoöplankton in het Belgisch deel van de Noordzee (BPNS) te bepalen. Response in termen van biodiversiteit zal geanalyseerd worden aan de hand van veranderingen in dichtheden en diversiteit van zoöplanktongemeenschappen en (sub) populaties van een of enkele geselecteerde sleutelsoorten (bv. calanoide copepoden). Verder zullen de functionele biodiversiteit en de rol van klimaatfactoren, nutriënten en verontreinigende stoffen daarop, worden onderzocht door biochemische profilering (vetzuren) van deze sleutelsoorten gelet op hun centrale rol in de energie-uitwisseling tussen primaire en hogere trofische niveaus.\r\nOm de responses van zoöplankton ten op zichte van omgevingsfactoren goed te documenteren is monitoring met een hoog rendement, een hoge nauwkeurigheid en een hoge ruimtelijke en temporele resolutie vereist.
