Stemming from the literature on the link between nature and wellbeing, the PhD aims to investigate the specific mechanisms that explain how coastal environments impact wellbeing. Current research on green spaces agree that physical activity, stress reduction, social interactions, and air quality are all important mediators, however the emotional dimension has yet to be investigated. This PhD will focus on two prominent emotions, awe and nostalgia, that potentially explain why being at the coast boosts our hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing. We will additionally evaluate whether increasing sensory awareness to the coast through mindful attention reinforces the link between the coast and wellbeing, through awe and nostalgia.

Voortkomend uit de literatuur over het verband tussen natuur en welzijn, wil het doctoraat de specifieke mechanismen onderzoeken die verklaren hoe kustmilieus het welzijn beïnvloeden. Lopend onderzoek naar groene ruimtes is het erover eens dat fysieke activiteit, stressvermindering, sociale interacties en luchtkwaliteit allemaal belangrijke mediatoren zijn, maar de emotionele dimensie moet nog worden onderzocht. Dit doctoraat richt zich op twee prominente emoties, ontzag en nostalgie, die mogelijk verklaren waarom het feit dat we aan de kust zijn ons hedonische en eudaimonische welzijn bevordert. Daarnaast zullen we evalueren of het vergroten van zintuiglijk bewustzijn naar de kust door middel van 'mindful' aandacht de band tussen de kust en het welzijn, door ontzag en nostalgie versterkt.
