Seismic data can significantly contribute to such knowledge by revealing subsurface patterns and the internal architecture of sandbanks, which allows to establish 3D models. Despite major advances based on metric-resolution sparker seismic data, model uncertainties for resources on the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) are still very high at locations where seismic data are scarce or poor. This is especially true for the new ‘Exploration Zone’ on the outer BCS, which (after the closure of the more proximal sand extraction zones) will become more prominent in the near future.\r\nThis project therefore aims to update and refine the geological knowledge of the Exploration Zone by acquiring new seismic data, including the latest ultra-high-resolution subbottom profiling techniques (most notably, deci- to centimetric-resolution parametric echosounder). Integrating these data with new (vibro)cores will furthermore enhance resource quality assessments. Importantly, these data will at the same time provide the opportunity to instigate Quaternary stratigraphic, palaeolandscape and geo-archaeological research on the outer BCS, which (due to the lack of data) has so far received little attention. Yet, this area forms an important transition zone connecting the palaeo-valley systems of the Inner-Middle BCS and the Axial Channel which dominates the Outer BCS and wider English Channel region.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het duurzaam beheren van zand- en grindvoorraden op zee vereist een grondig begrip van hun verdeling, samenstelling en dynamiek. Seismische data kunnen bijdragen tot dergelijke kennis door patronen in de ondergrond en de interne architectuur van zandbanken in beeld te brengen, wat toelaat 3D modellen te ontwikkelen. Ondanks de vooruitgang die op dit vlak geboekt is a.d.h.v. sparker seismiek (~1-2 m resolutie), blijft de onzekerheid van dergelijke modellen voor het Belgisch Continentaal Plat (BCP) groot op plekken waar seismische data schaars of van mindere kwaliteit is. Dit is bijvoorbeeld het geval voor de nieuwe ‘Exploratiezone’ op het buitenste deel van het BCP, die (door de sluiting van de meer kustnabije extractiezones) in de nabije toekomst een meer prominente rol zal vervullen.\r\nDit project beoogt daarom de geologische kennis van de Exploratiezone te updaten en verfijnen door nieuwe seismische data te verzamelen, inclusief de meest recente ultra-hoge-resolutie profileringstechnieken (in het bijzonder, parametrische echosounder met deci- tot centimetrische resolutie). De integratie van nieuwe sedimentkernen (vibrocores) zal bovendien helpen om de kwaliteit van de voorraden beter te kunnen evalueren. Deze data zullen tegelijk een belangrijke bijdrage vormen tot het Kwartair stratigrafisch, paleo-landschappelijk en geo-archeologisch onderzoek op het buitenste deel van het BCP, dat (door de schaarste aan data) tot nog toe relatief onderbelicht gebleven is.
