To study the biogeography of species of seaweeds and echinoderms present along the coasts of the former \"Transkei\" (Eastern cape) to northern Kwazulu-Natal. 2. To document the dominant species in communities, with particular regard to current and potential economic species. 3. To collaboorate with other groups working on intertidal resources and marine biogeography, to provide taxonomic assistance.\r\nBilateral scientific and technological co-operation with the University of Cape Town - Botany Department, Southern Afrika. Co-promoted by Bolton John.","AbstractOtherLang":"De fylogenetische relaties tussen de levende klassen echinodermen (Holothuroidea, Asteroidea, Echinoidea, Crinoidea en Ophiuroidea) zijn voor evolutionaire biologen nog steeds grotendeels enigmatisch. De fylogenie van de Asteroidea, Crinoidea Ophiuroidea en Echinoidea werden door middel van vergelijkend morfologisch en moleculair onderzoek grotendeels opgelost. De fylogenie en de evolutie van de zeekomkommers daaerentegen berust nof steeds grotendeels op vergelijkend morfologisch onderzoek en heeft tot op heden geen consensus opgeleverd. Door middel van sequentievergelijking van mitochondriale en nucleaire eiwit-coderende genen zal dit onderzoek ten eerste de evolutie en fylogenie van de Holothuroidea binnen de Echinodermata en ten tweede de evolutie en fylogenie van de Aspidochirotida binnen de Holothuroidea ophelderen. Deze data zullen ons derhalve in staat stellen om de huidige systematische relaties binnen de Echinodermata en de Holothuroidea in het bijzonder te herzien. deze informatie is essentieel bij het opstellen va beheersplannen voor deze overgeëxploiteerde fauna. Zo zal als onmiddelijke toepassing van deze moleculaire systematiek de herkenning van echinodermenlarves mogelijk worden, waardoor reële populatiestructuren beter ingeschat zullen kunnen wordne.
