However, current ocean carbon measurements don’t match model predictions, creating uncertainty about the ocean’s role in climate regulation. This gap affects our ability to make effective decisions on climate action. More accurate, high-density data from the Southern Ocean could resolve this issue. In this context, the EU-funded TRICUSO project will advance sensing technologies on robotic floats and uncrewed vessels, supporting citizen science on yachts and improving data access for scientists. TRICUSO will also evaluate how many observations are needed and suggest governance structures to support a global greenhouse gas tracking system.
