The primary objective of MARE-WIND is to investigate the ecological and societal impacts of offshore wind farms (OFWs) on marine ecosystems, with a focus on how siting, operation and decommissioning processes influence these effects. We aim to provide critical insights into how OFWs transform biodiversity, trophic dynamics, and contaminant transfer. In parallel, we will assess how integrating ecosystem health and societal needs into OWFs planning can reduce community and political resistance, ultimately supporting more sustainable and publicly accepted offshore wind development. VLIZ and UGent will collaborate on investigating how electromagnetic fields from OWF subsea power cables affect biodiversity movement patterns and behavior of marine species.

De primaire doelstelling van MARE-WIND is het onderzoeken van de ecologische en maatschappelijke impact van offshore windparken (OFW's) op mariene ecosystemen, met een focus op hoe locatiekeuze, exploitatie en ontmantelingsprocessen deze effecten beïnvloeden. We streven ernaar kritische inzichten te verschaffen in hoe OFW's de biodiversiteit, trofische dynamiek en de overdracht van contaminanten beïnvloeden. Tegelijkertijd zullen we onderzoeken hoe de integratie van ecosysteemgezondheid en maatschappelijke behoeften in de planning van offshore windparken de weerstand vanuit de gemeenschap en de politiek kan verminderen, wat uiteindelijk leidt tot een duurzamere en publiekelijk geaccepteerde ontwikkeling van offshore windenergie. VLIZ en UGent zullen samenwerken om te onderzoeken hoe elektromagnetische velden van onderzeese elektriciteitskabels van offshore windparken de bewegingspatronen van biodiversiteit en het gedrag van mariene soorten beïnvloeden.
