The biodiversity of microbial mats, present in Antarctic lakes will be investigated on the basis of culturable and nonculturable micro-organisms. The isolated micro-organisms will be screened for their potential production of bioactive compounds. The laboratory of microbiology is in charge of isolation and identification of heterotrophic bacteria.

De biodiversiteit van microbiële matten, voorkomend in meren op Antarctica zal onderzocht worden, zowel op basis van kweekbare als niet-kweekbare micro-organismen. De geïsoleerde micro-organismen zullen gescreend worden naar hun potentiële productie van bio-actieve stoffen. Het Laboratorium voor microbiologie is belast met het isoleren en identificeren van heterotrofe bacteriën.
