The combination of gene flow, natural selection and genetic drift cause intraspecific genetic variation. The signi-ficance of dispersal and gene flow is expressed for example in the usually larger genetic differentiation among populations of terrestrial species than of marine species. The degree to which genetic differentiation between natural populations is determined by chance than by natural selection is controversial. It is exactly in this field that the research community is active. The central questions include : 1. The patterns of genetic biodiversity in a number of model  organisms.  2. The mechanisms which cause these patterns.","AbstractOtherLang":"\r\nGenetische variatie binnen een soort omvat genetische variatie binnen natuurlijke populaties en de genetische differentiatie tussen populaties. De combinatie van genmigratie, natuurlijke selectie en genetische drift liggen aan de basis van de intraspecifieke genetische variatie. Het belang van dispersie en genmigratie uit zich bijvoorbeeld in de doorgaans grotere genetische differentiatie tussen populaties van terrestrische soorten dan van mariene soorten. In welke mate genetische differentiatie tussen natuurlijke populaties vooral bepaald wordt door toevalprocessen dan wel door natuurlijke selectie is controversieel. Het is juist in dit onderzoeksgebied dat de onderzoeksgemeenschap zich profileert. De centrale vraagstellingen betreffen : 1. De patronen van genetische biodiversiteit bij een aantal modelorganismen.  2.
