In spite of their established ecological and derived economical (coastal fisheries, protection against coastal erosion) and direct economical importance (e.g. timber and fuel), they are still threatened because of lack of protection and lack of management. A rational management requires insight into the vegetation dynamics, which cannot be established over a short period, nor retrospectively, unless a time series of aerial photographs is available. This is the case for the Sri Lankan mangal, studied by the VUB. The programme in the proposal aims at the analysis of vegetation dynamics in mangals of S.W. Sri Lanka on basis of aerial photographs (1956-94). Because within mangal vegetation overview and positioning is extremely difficult (yet necessary for the vegetation recording methodology) a global positioning system is required and applied for in the proposal.","AbstractOtherLang":"Mangrovebossen komen voor op alle tropische kusten en in lagunaire systemen van tropische gebieden (ongeveer tussen 30e breedtegraden), waar aan een aantal omgevingsvoorwaarden voldaan is (substraathelling, -type, watersamenstelling, golfslagbeschutting enz.). Ondanks hun grote ecologische en afgeleide economische rol (kustvisserij, erosiebescherming) en rechtstreekse economische rol (bv. houtontginning) worden zij onvoldoende beschermd en beheerd. Voor een rationeel beheer is een begrip van de dynamiek van dit vegetatietype noodzakelijk. In de vegetatiekunde is het onmogelijk deze op korte termijn of retrospectief te bepalen, tenzij dankzij luchtfotografie in tijdseries een beeld van de vroegere toestand verkregen kan worden. Dit is het geval voor mangrovegebieden die door de VUB onderzocht worden. Het voorgestelde programma heeft tot doel de analyse van de mangroven van Zuidwest Sri Lanka op basis van luchtfotoseries (1956-1994) uit te diepen.
