If future developments result in a considerable increase in reed vegetation, it will be important to know what happens to the reed deritus that is yearly compounds. These processes are studied within the OMES project.Another part of the reed deritus is a potential food source for the zooplankton, and the study of the transfer reeds- zooplankton is not included in the present OMES project. To study and quantify the transfer between  detritus originating from reeds and zooplankton, we intend to use 15N tracer techniques (on which ANCH VUB has expertise) combined with knowledge on zooplankton metabolism (for which ECOL VUB is responsible). Plants cultured on 15N -enriched soils, become themselves enriched in 15N. This enrichment is passed on to the organisms feeding on these plants. Conversion rates are determined following the appropriate mass balance equations.","AbstractOtherLang":"Dit onderzoeksvoorstel kadert in de bredere context van het OMES-project, waarbij de rol van de schorre-vegetatie in het ecosysteemcentraal staat. Mocht er in de toekomst een belangrijke toename van rietvegetaties kunnen gerealiseerd worden, dan wordt het uiteraard belangrijk te weten wat er gebeurt met het rietafval dat jaarlijks geproduceerd wordt. Een deel van dit organisch materiaal ondergaat omvormingen tot opgeloste organische en anorganische verbindingen; de studie hiervan vormt een deelaspect van het huidig OMES-project.Een ander deel is mogelijk een voedingsbron voor zooplankton, en de studie van deze transfer is niet vervat in de objectieven van het OMES-project. Om de stofstroom rietafval-zooplankton beter te omschrijven en te kwantificeren wensen we gebruik te maken van de 15Ntracer methodologie (waarvoor de expertise bestaat in ANCH) in combinatie met de kennis van het zooplanktonmetabolisme (waarvoor de verantwoordelijkheid ligt bij ECOL). Cultuurplanten, geteeld op voedingsbodems aangerijkt in 15N, vertonen na afloop van tijd zelf een aanrijking in 15N, die zich eveneens manifesteert in het organisme dat zich voedt met de plant.
