Organochloren en zware metalen worden via een deregulering van het immuunsysteem en mogelijk ook door een rechtstreekse intoxicatie verantwoordelijk geachtvoor massale sterftes van dolfijnen in de Middellandse zee en de Noordzee. Algemeen wordt gevreesd dat de achteruitgang van de algemene gezondheidstoestand van de populaties -naast overbevissing en overbevaring van de zeeën- één van de grote bedreigingen vormt voor het voortbestaan van een aantal soorten. In dit verband moet bv. de studie van de speciatie van de diverse polluenten (organisch/anorganisch kwik) en van de mechanismen van metabolisatie een inzicht geven van de toxiciteitvan een aantal stoffen. Het doel van deze studie is vierledig:1. een eerste vraag geldt de doodsoorzaak van gestrande of aangespoeldedieren. Alle dieren worden in principe aan een grondig anatomo- pathologisch onderzoek onderworpen (Coignoul, Siebert). De ecotoxicologische resultaten worden hiermee vergeleken. Deze  interdiciplinaire benadering moet een betere bepaling van mogelijke doodsoorzaken mogelijk maken. 2. Anatomo-pathologie en ecotoxicologie zullen ons een duidelijk beeldgeven over de algemene gezondheidstoestand van de natuurlijke populaties van dolfijnen, bruinvissen e.a. 3. De walvisachtigen worden ook beschouwd als bioindicatoren voor contaminatie van de mariene ecosystemen. Als toppredatoren zullen vnl.de tandwalvissen de contaminatie van een heel voedselweb integreren en weerspiegelen. 4. Walvisachtigen beschikken over een aantal mechanismen die mogelijk een zekere bescherming bieden tegen intoxicaties door bv. zware metalen  (Selenium, metallothioneinen); anderzijds blijken tandwalvissen niet over de nodige enzymes te beschikken die een metabolisatie van bv. PCBs moeten mogelijk maken, dit in tegenstelling met vele landzoogdieren.
