A copper concentration of 500 ppb was found to be acutely toxic to both the megalops and juvenile stages. The megalops larvae were more sensitive to copper than were the juveniles. Copper at a concentration of 250 ppb was chronically toxic. At 50 ppb copper, no mortalities attributable to copper occurred among megalops or juveniles in 130 days. At this concentration, the length of intermolt periods was decreased, resulting in a faster growth rate than that of controls. Mortalities among crabs exposed to lethal concentrations of copper usually occurred during or immediately after a molt.
