The three <i>Desmoscolex</i> species from Papua New Guinea lack cephalic tubercles, structures that were previously considered as synapomorphies for species of the genus <i>Desmoscolex</i>. A new species, <i>Desmoscolex (Desmoscolex) parvospiculatus</i>, is described from Papua New Guinea. It is characterized by its short body with 18 main rings, a typical desmoscolecoid pattern of setae, setae, a short end ring, the presence of an anterior concentration of pigment granules, a lip region pattern with a low oral rim provided with three cuticular protrusions, and short straight spicules in males. Additional data are given for D.
