A plot based field survey was carried out in July-August 2005 to assess the current vegetation structure and regeneration of the forest. Long-term forest changes were examined using black and white historic aerial photographs (dating back to 1967) and a panchromatic IKONOS satellite image of 2005. Remotely sensed material was visually interpreted to produce vegetation maps and change analysis in a Geographic InformationSystem (GIS) environment. Analysis showed that large areas of mangrove were cleared for charcoal and salt production.
