In diverse experiments eutrofying phenomena have been observed, that are closely related with a inhibition of the development of zooplankton, influenced by toxicants. This report gives an overview of the mesocosm experiments, executed by TNO and gives a number of examples of the creation of eutrofying phenomena in relation to effects of toxicants on zooplankton. With examples it is made credible that the concentration of certain toxicants has been, and probably still is, a noxious influence on the functioning of calanoid copepods. This results in a less efficient control of the algae density by the zooplankton. This risk of eutrofying phenomena seems to increase both thanks to the supply of nutrients and thanks to the toxication-load from the sea. Therefore, we can conclude that in a clean sea the pelagic ecosystem would have a less hard job processing the nutrients. For an integrated water management, it is necessary to take this close relation into account as far as micro pollution and eutrofying is concerned. The examples from this report indicate once again that in mesocosm research crucial factors and processes, that determine the response of the ecosystem on the environmental disturbance, will show, without their importance being detected at forehand. Results of mesocosm experiments, however, may not be translated to the open sea situations without further ado.","AbstractOtherLang":"TNO Den Helder kent een zeer lange traditie in de de uitvoering van diverse, ecotoxicologische mesocosm-experimenten. In diverse experimenten zijn eutrofiëringsverschijnselen waargenomen die samenhangen met een remming van de zoöplankton ontwikkeling onder invloed van toxicanten. Dit rapport geeft een overzicht van de door TNO uitgevoerde mesocosm experimenten, en geeft een aantal voorbeelden van het ontstaan van eutrofiëringsverschijnselen in relatie tot effecten van toxicanten op zoöplankton. Met voorbeelden wordt aannemelijk gemaakt dat de concentratie van bepaalde toxicanten in Noordzee-kustwater van nadelige invloed is geweest, en wellicht nog is, op het functioneren van calanoïde copepoden. Dit resulteert in een minder goede controle van de algendichtheid door het zoöplankton. Het risico op het optreden van eutrofiëringsverschijnselen lijkt dan ook toe te nemen met zowel het nutriënten aanbod als de toxicantenbelasting van de zee. Hieruit kan worden verondersteld dat in een schone zee het pelagische ecosysteem minder moeite heeft nutriënten te verwerken. Voor een integraal waterbeheer is het noodzakelijk rekening te houden met deze samenhang inzake microverontreiniging en eutrofiëring. De voorbeelden uit het rapport maken nog eens duidelijk dat in mesocosm- onderzoek cruciale factoren en processen, die de respons van het ecosysteem op een milieuverstoring bepalen, aan het licht komen zonder dat hun belang vooraf kon worden onderkent.
