Een grootschalig model zoals WAQUA/CSM8 wordt gebruikt voor het verwachten van de waterstanden op het Continentaal Plat. Voor het berekenen van de windopzet wordt het model aan het oppervlak geforceerd met ruimtelijk variabele wind- en drukvelden geleverd door het KNMI. In kleinschaligere modellen, zoals het Westerschelde-model dat bij het HMCZ wordt gebruikt voor het berekenen van de waterstanden in de Westerschelde, wordt nog voornamelijk gebruik gemaakt van uniforme wind- en drukvelden.
