Ze waren voor de Nederlandse overheid de rechtstreekse aanleiding tot het opstellen van het Deltaplan. In Vlaanderen was de schade veel beperkter; pas na de stormvloed van januari 1976 toen onder meer Ruisbroek onderliep, werd een gelijkaardig plan voor Vlaanderen uitgewerkt, het Sigmaplan.
