Outlines the consequences about the modification of the closing of the Eastern Scheldt for the improvement plan of the canal. This encloses alterations to accomodate four-barge push-tows, removal of the locks at Wemeldinge despite the tidal movements in the Eastern Scheldt, construction of new locks at Hansweert, similar to those in the Philips Dam and retaining the open nature of the canal with its lifting bridges. The improvement works which started in 1983 has been implemented into stages.
