An analytical solution is obtained for a simplified, one-dimensional, linearized set of equations, which suggests that the first mode of oscillation - exhibiting one node only - should be dominant. The sensitivity to the wind stress, the stratification and the unpertubed thermocline depth of the amplitude and period of t he linear solution is analysed.
