They have the endurance, economy, speed, communications and positioning of USV’s combined with the stability and much of the covertness of UUV’s to give a new, adaptable, mobile instrumentation platform. If they are also stable at slow and zero speed they can deploy sensors to depth either from a winch or a daughter ROV or AUV. Autonomous Surface Vehicles Ltd have developed just such a vehicle and have recently received an order for a commercial variant for survey purposes.
