Hoewel de afmetingen van het sluizencomplex in Panama lang richtinggevend geweest zijn voor de zogenaamde schepen van het Panamax type met een scheepsbreedte van 32.3 m, nemen de scheepsafmetingen van bijvoorbeeld het containerverkeer voortdurend toe. Het maximale aantal vervoerde containereenheden per schip bedraagt momenteel 9000 TEU (Twenty feet Equivalent Units) terwijl de nieuwe sluizen in Panama ontworpen worden voor 11000 tot 12000 TEU containerschepen.Rekening houdend met de beperkte waterdiepte in de Noordzee en de getijafhankelijke scheepvaart naar de Vlaamse havens, is de manoeuvreerbaarheid van schepen in ondiep water een belangrijk onderzoeksdomein geworden voor waterwegbeheerders en havenautoriteiten. Met de installatie van een  scheepsmanoeuvreersimulator in 1989 en een sleeptank in 1992 in het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium, hebben de Vlaamse autoriteiten duidelijk gekozen voor het experimenteel onderzoek van scheepsmanoeuvres in omgevingsomstandigheden die sterk verschillen van de ontwerpcondities.<br><br>In de eerste plaats werd een modulair opgebouwd wiskundig model geselecteerd dat scheepsmanoeuvres kan beschrijven in zeer uiteenlopende combinaties van scheepssnelheden en telegraafstanden (vier kwadranten modellering). Hiervoor werden uitgebreide proevenreeksen uitgevoerd in de Sleeptank voor Manoeuvres in Ondiep Water (samenwerking Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium - Universiteit Gent) met 4 m lange modellen van een vierde generatie containerschip en de 278000-dwt tanker Esso Osaka. De gekozen proefparameters en proeftypes blijken vooral in ondiep water een belangrijke invloed te hebben op de formulering van het wiskundige manoeuvreermodel. Het onderzoek van deze effecten heeft geleid tot een optimaal proevenprogramma dat afhankelijk van het toepassingsgebied verder kan gereduceerd worden. Dit maakt het mogelijk het scheepsgedrag op een betrouwbare wijze te voorspellen binnen een economisch aanvaardbare termijn. Het omzetten van de resultaten op schaal naar ware grootte blijkt onder meer door het gebrek aan kennis over schaaleffecten nog steeds een moeilijke opdracht, niet in het minst door het gebrek aan data op ware grootte. Om voldoende achtergrond te verzamelen wordt daarom een sensitiviteitsanalyse voorgesteld zodat de validatie door nautici - i.h.b. loodsen - op de scheepsmanoeuvreersimulator gefundeerd kan verlopen.<br><br>Deze moeilijkheden bij het opzetten van een voorspellingsmodel voor scheepsmanoeuvres, worden ook erkend door internationale organisaties zoals de ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) en de IMO (International Maritime Organization), twee instellingen die net zoals de Vlaamse overheden veilige scheepvaart hoog in het vaandel dragen. De hoop wordt daarom uitgesproken dat dit gedetailleerd onderzoek naar scheepsmanoeuvres in ondiep water, tot deze doelstelling kan bijdragen.","BibLvlCode":"M","StandardTitle":"Selectie,
