They mediate key biogeochemical processes and serve pivotal functional roles in complex ecosystems, yet little is known about mechanisms responsible for the formation of microbial ecological diversity patterns. Highthroughput molecular biology provides a powerful tool for measuring and monitoring patterns of microbial diversity. SARST-V6 (Serial Analysis of V6 Ribosomal Sequence Tags) is a promising technology that uses short DNA sequence tags to fingerprint the composition of microbial communities.
