An account is given of the development of cupped oyster culture in European coastal waters, outlining case histories in Portugal, France, Holland, UK, Ireland, Denmark, and Germany. Now, naturally reproducing populations of <i>C.gigas</i> exist, whose larvae can move along the European coasts with a speed (in northern direction) of at least 8-10 km per day.
