This experiment was performed in order to see if it was possible to explain a macrobenthic population patterning at a scale of a few meters by an experimental hydrodynamic modification. Bamboo patches of two different densities were put on a mud flat in January 2002. Subsequently larval settlement (June) and adult macrofauna structure (August) were analyzed in a transect perpendicular to the ripple marks across the patch (upstream, inside and downstream). Sediment composition was also determined. Field observations and flume measurements permit to characterize the hydrodynamic modifications.The flume experiment showed that the bamboo patches induced an increase in turbulence. Moreover the field observations revealed erosion in the front part of the patch and sedimentation in the back. The analyses of the sediment composition showed a decrease in the percentage of mud in the high-density area and particularly inside the patches. Multivariate analysis of the fauna data showed differences in macrofauna assemblages that can be explained by one axis linked with the bamboo density. Analyses of variance of the macrobenthic density and biomass data showed a decrease of the suspension feeder density inside and behind the patches. Sub-surface deposit feeders decreased behind the patches relative to the other positions, but the high variability in the control did not allow to conclude whether this was due to an increase behind the patches, or to a decrease inside. No distinct pattern was seen for surface deposit feeders, and negative effects of the bamboo density were recorded for the predators and omnivores. Moreover, larval recruitment was also negatively affected by the bamboo patches. We suggest that the suspension feeders were directly affected by the hydrodynamic modification, whereas the other groups were more indirectly influenced.","AbstractOtherLang":"La répartition spatiale à petite échelle des populations benthiques est principalement expliquable par les processus biologiques. Cette expérimentation a été réalisée dans le but de voir s’il était possible d’expliquer la répartition d’une population macrobenthique à une échelle de quelques mettres par une modification expérimentale des conditions hydrodynamiques. Des groupements de bambous de deux densités différentes ont été placés sur un estran vaseux en janvier 2002. Par la suite l’établissement larvaire (juin) et la structure de la macrofaune adulte (août) ont été analysés sur un transect perpendiculaire aux ripple marks à travers les groupements de bambous (en amont, à l’intérieur et en aval). La composition du sédiment a aussi été déterminée. Des observations de terrain et des mesures faites dans un flume ont permis de caractériser les modifications hydrodynamiques.L’expérimentation dans le flume montre que le groupe de bambous induit une augmentation de la turbulence. De plus les observations sur le terrain révèlent une érosion dans la partie amont du groupement et une sédimentation en aval. Les analyses de composition du sédiment montrent une diminution du pourcentage de vase dans l’aire de haute densité, et particulièrement à l’intérieur des groupements de bambous. Une analyse multivariée des données de la macrofaune montre des différences dans les assemblages qui peuvent être expliquées par un axe lié à la densité de bambous. Des analyses de variance des données de densité et de biomasse macrobenthique montrent une diminution de la densité des filtreurs à l’intérieur et après les groupements de bambous. La densité des déposivores de sub-surface augmente après le groupement relativement aux autres positions, mais la grande variabilité des contrôles ne permet pas de conclure si cela est dû à une augmentation après le groupement ou une diminution à l’intérieur. Il n’y a pas eu de modification particulière pour les déposivores de surface, et un effet négatif de la densité de bambous a été enregistré pour les prédateurs et omnivores. De plus, le recrutement larvaire a aussi était négativement affecté par les groupements de bambous.
