There are indications that bioturbation in soft bottoms plays a majorrole in marine and fresh water systems by changing the physical, chemical and biologicalproperties of the sediment. Corophium volutator consumes diatoms and can, when present inhigh densities, regulate the abundance and species composition of the diatom community.There are indications for macro- meiofauna interactions and competition with other depositfeeders can be expected when food is a limiting factor. The effect of bioturbation by C.volutator on the functionality of the co-occuring copepod species Platychelipus littoralis wasstudied in this thesis. The effect of the amphipod on the production of extracellukar polysacharids (EPS) by epipelic diatoms and the stability of the sediment was also studied. For this purpose, several experiments were conducted. First the feeding rate of C. volutator was studied in the absence and presence of sediment. EPS production was also measured in the absence and presence of C. volutator. In another experiment, the effect of C. volutator on the feeding rate of Platychelipus littoralis was tested by means of 13C labeled diatoms. Thisexperiment was first conducted in petri dishes but was later repeated in sediment cores. At the end of each experiment, EPS production was measured. The stability of the sediment in the cores was measured using a Cohesive Strength Meter (CSM). The presence of C. volutator had no effect on the production of EPS by the diatom Navicula phyllepta. The harpacticoid Platychelipus littoralis showed an increase in uptake in thepresence of the amphipod. This is probably due to a better mixing of the diatom biofilm down to deeper sediment layers by C. volutator. This can increase the food availability for the benthic harpacticoid P. littoralis. Bioturbation by C. volutator caused a decrease in erosion treshold of the sediment. This is probably due to an increase in pore spaces and saturation on emersion, by retention of water by the secretions that line their burrows. The grazing upon diatoms that stabilize the sediment through their biofilm, will also have a negative effect on the overall sediment stability. Corophium volutator is not only responsable for bioturbation of the sediment but also causes functional changes that will affect co-occuring species. The dominant harpacticoid P. littoralis in our study area was positively affected. This contributes to an optimum use of the available primary production.","AbstractOtherLang":"In het intertidale slikken- en schorrengebied van de Ijzermonding (Nieuwpoort) is debioturbator Corophium volutator in grote aantallen aanwezig. Studies hebben aangetoond datbioturbatie, door organismen in zachte substraten, door het veranderen van de fysische,chemische en biologische sedimenteigenschappen een grote rol speelt in het functioneren vanmariene en zoetwaterecosystemen. Corophium volutator begraast diatomeeën en bij hogeconcentraties is de amfipode niet alleen in staat om de abundantie van dediatomeeënpopulatie te reguleren maar ook de soortensamenstelling. Er zijn indicatiesgevonden voor interacties tussen macro- en meiofauna en er kan dan ook competitie metandere grazende organismen in limiterende omstandigheden verwacht worden .In deze scriptie werd het effect van de aanwezigheid van C. volutator en de hiermee gepaardebioturbatie op de functionaliteit van de sympatrische copeopdensoort Platychelipus littoralisbestudeerd. Parallel met dit onderzoek werd eveneens het effect van C. volutator onderzochtop de productie van extracellulaire polysachariden (EPS) door diatomeeën en op de stabiliteit van het sediment. Hiertoe werden verschillende laboratoriumexperimenten uitgevoerd. Allereerst werd er onderzocht in welke mate C. volutator zich voedt met diatomeeën in experimentele eenheden met en zonder sediment. Parallel met dit experiment werden er EPS bepalingen uitgevoerd in de aan- en afwezigheid van C. volutator. In een volgend experiment werd de voedselopname van P. littoralis vergeleken in de aan- en afwezigheid van C. volutator door gebruik te maken van 13C aangerijkte diatomeeën. Dit gebeurde aanvankelijk in petriplaten maar werd herhaald in sedimentcores met artificieel getijdensysteem. Op het einde van elk experiment werd een EPS bepaling uitgevoerd en in de sedimentcores werd de sedimentstabiliteit bepaald door middel van een Cohesive Strength Meter (CSM). De aanwezigheid van C. volutator had geen effect op de geproduceerde EPS van Naviculaphyllepta. Platychelipus littoralis vertoonde een positieve trend in voedselopname in de aanwezigheid van C. volutator wat waarschijnlijk te wijten is aan het vermengen van de diatomeeënbiofilm naar alle sedimentlagen door C. volutator. Dit zou de voedselbeschikbaarheid vergroten voor de benthische harpacticoide P. littoralis. Debioturbator C. volutator veroorzaakte een verlaging van de erosiedrempel van het sediment. Dit effect is waarschijnlijk het gevolg van het vergroten van interstitiële ruimtes en het verhogen van de watersaturatie. Daarenboven zal het begrazen van diatomeeën en de hiermee geassocieerde biofilm door C. volutator de sedimentstabiliteit negatief beïnvloeden. Corophium volutator is naast de zichtbare bioturbatie van het sediment ook verantwoordelijk voor tal van functionele effecten die sympatrische organismen zullen beïnvloeden. Dedominante harpacticoide Platychelipus littoralis in het studiegebied werd positief beïnvloed.
