Living on the terrestrial part of our planet has led to an impasse in knowledge. People know too little about oceans and seas. Secondary education is the best time and place to upgrade this basic marine knowledge. Interest analysis with Focus Group technique of pupils, their science teachers and marine scientists were performed and revealed an overall positive outcome. Curriculum analysis confirmed that no marine topics are taught during biology lessons in secondary education (second and third grade ASO) today. A referring list of marine topics that could be integrated in these curricula was made. The only available solution at present, is 'marinating' the existing curricula. In order to motivate teachers for integrating marine aspects in their course, digital ready-to-teach packages about these marine topics were developed. To create a permanent broad scale upgrade of marine knowledge within the public the curricula themselves should include basic marine knowledge. In both cases, a user friendly backup data system together with a growing digital package of ready-to-teach lectures about oceans and seas will be crucial, to offer high quality marine educational outreach to the teachers.","AbstractOtherLang":"De meeste mensen onderschatten het belang van de zeeen en oceanen. Onze kennis erover is zeer beperkt en volledig buiten proportie tot wat we weten over het vasteland. en tot het maatschappelijk belang ervan. Het middelbaar onderwijs schiet hierin blijkbaar tekort. Nochtans is er veel vraag en interesse. Via focusgroep techniek werd gepeild naar de interesse voor een uitgebreider aanbod van mariene leerstof in het middelbaar onderwijs (bij de leerlingen, hun leerkrachten en mariene wetenschappers). Het resultaat was alom positief. Vervolgens bevestigden leerplannen analyses van tweede en derde graad (ASO, gemeenschapsonderwijs) dat er momenteel geen marien gerelateerde onderwerpen worden onderwezen tijdens de lessen biologie. Er werd tevens een lijst opgemaakt van mogelijkheden om in deze leerplannen lessen over de zee in te passen. De enige manier momenteel om het basistekort aan mariene kennis bij de leerlingen te verminderen is het zogenaamd 'marineren' van de bestaande leerplannen met onderwerpen uit deze lijst. Om leerkrachten hiertoe te motiveren werden digitale kant en klare lespakketten over de zee ontwikkeld. Een permanente oplossing op brede schaal kan verkregen worden wanneer mariene basiskennis een plaats krijgt in de leerplannen zelf.
