The <i>Polarstern</i>, an icebreaker belonging to the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Germany, has just carried out the first in-depth exploration of these sea beds. This took place as a preview to the Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML) programme, which is on the menu of the International Polar Year.
