The overall eye morphology is most similar to some previously described deep-dwelling amphipods, though not other hyperiids. Electroretinograms suggest that <i>S. crassicornis</i> possesses a relatively sensitive eye with slow temporal dynamics, and a monochromatic visual system (λ<sub>max</sub>=472 nm).
