The ultimate goal is to stop or reverse the degradation of biological processes and the loss of biodiversity in key marine and coastal areas in the Africa and Madagascar region. The purpose of the program is to conserve selected critical marine and coastal areas and species, and maintain their productivity in a way that sustains local livelihoods and national economics in the long term. In the background to this strategy (Annex III), ecological processes and biodiversity, and the concerns specific to each subregion are analyzed and discussed in regard to priorities and threats.
