Meer en meer wordt het al dan niet samengaan van economie en ecologie in estuaria een bron van verhitte discussies, zoals het geval met het Schelde-estuarium. Havens willen een ruimere vaargeul, bewoners willen vooral veiligheid en natuurbewegingen een meer gezonde natuur. Over de impact van een mogelijke verruiming van de vaargeul in dit Schelde-estuarium loopt er een studie waarin sediment en morfologie centraal staan. Opmerkelijk is dat onze kennis op gebied van sedimentbewegingen en morfologische ontwikkelingen, alsook van de relaties met de natuur algemeen als te beperkt wordt beschouwd om de effecten van menselijke ingrepen op de natuur met enige zekerheid te voorspellen. Men kan echter niet wachten tot voldoende kennis is opgebouwd om sediment en morfologie in estuaria te beheren, zeker omdat vroegere ingrepen reeds hebben gezorgd voor een afbouw van de natuurlijke waarden van estuaria. Het is daarom belangrijk te starten met een diagnostiek, steunend op informatie uit het verleden, die toelaat de relatieve rol van de verschillende ingrepen in te schatten, met aandacht voor de evoluties die te wijten zijn aan natuurlijke factoren zoals veranderingen in de zeespiegel peilen.
