Amino-N, as a proportion of total ninhydrin-positive-substances, varied between 0 and 63%. Excretion rates were highest in the summer and lowest in the winter. These changes are related to seasonal cycles of gametogenesis and the storage and utilization of body reserves. During the winter nitrogen excretion rates increased as a result of starvation; in the summer and autumn, rates decreased during starvation. As a result, nitrogen balance was better controlled during starvation in the summer than in the winter.
