The aim was to determine whether one salt might be considered more toxic than the other, as measured by a common physiological parameter, gill-tissue respiration, and by enzyme activity in liver and skeletal muscle. Whether these different criteria of metabolic stress would lead to similar conclusions regarding the relative toxicities of these 2 salts was also investigated. Short-term exposure to 0 . 5 ppm silver as either nitrate or acetate causes respiratory distress in the cunner.
