As well as a high percentage of water, acidic polysaccharides, neutral polysaccharides and proteins have been detected. The distribution and proportions of these 3 constituents differ from one sp to another. No chitin was detectable. The neutral polysaccharide representing the so-called tunicin, amounted to less than 40 percent of the crude dry weight.
