The diagnosis of the health state will be based upon biologicalindicators, among others. In this report we review and evaluate biological parameters and metrics proposedwithin the framework of European directives (Water Framework Directive, Natura 2000) and Dutch nature policy(Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency - MNP, National Ecological Network - EHS). We conclude thatmost of the these parameters are useful indicators of the Scheldt’s ecosystem health.<p>We prioritized the indicators based upon their mutual dependence. Highest priority is given to physico-chemical and hydro-morphological (ecotopes) elements that support the biological quality elements. Then biological elements were prioritized based upon food web structure and the possible impact of external factors. It should be noted, however, that the ecological status cannot be determined only based upon the highest priority indicators.<br>Finally, we provide information on the present status based on available data and knowledge. Data on particular subareas (e.g. the ebb-tidal delta) and elements (e.g. fishes) are lacking. The other elements indicate that desired ecological quality has not been achieved yet.","AbstractOtherLang":"Nederland zet zich, samen met Vlaanderen, in voor het behoud en de verbetering van een gezond Schelde-estuarium. Deze ‘gezondheid’ kan o.a. getoetst worden op basis van een aantal biologische parameters. In ditrapport is een inventarisatie gemaakt van de parameters die worden benut in het kader van een aantal Europeserichtlijnen (Kaderrichtlijn Water, Natura 2000) en nationaal beleid (Ecologische Hoofdstructuur) aangevuld metparameters voorgesteld door het Milieu- en Natuurplanbureau. Deze zijn vervolgens beoordeeld op debruikbaarheid als graadmeters voor deze gezondheidstoestand. Conclusie is dat de meeste graadmeters die zijn opgesteld, ook voor het Schelde-estuarium bruikbaar zijn.<p>Op basis van de onderlinge afhankelijkheid is een zekere prioriteit aan de graadmeters gegeven. Graadmeters die primair de biologische randvoorwaarden bepalen (fysisch-chemische kenmerken, ecotopen) hebben daarbij de hoogste prioriteit gekregen, graadmeters met betrekking tot het functioneren van het Schelde-estuarium en de aanwezige ecotopen een lagere prioriteit waarbij de inschaling afhankelijk gesteld is van de plaats in de voedselketen en de invloed van externe factoren. Het is echter niet zo dat de ecologische toestand enkel op basis van de graadmeters met hoogste prioriteit goed beschreven kan worden.<p>Tot slot is de huidige toestand geschetst, voor zover dit op basis van de beschikbare data en kennis mogelijk was. Goede gegevens over bepaalde gebieden (bijv. mondingsgebied) en graadmeters (bijv. vissen) ontbreken immers.
