Een literatuurstudie leertdat deze vergelijkingen zeer geschikt zijn voor het voorspellen van het gedrag van golven in ondiepwater, maar dat het model faalt wanneer deze golven breken. Dit grote nadeel wordt opgelost doorhet gebruik van een externe golfbrekingsmodule, die een artificiële viscositeit invoert in devergelijkingen. Een viertal parameters stuurt deze module, en deze parameters dienenexperimenteel vastgelegd te worden. Hiertoe werd een parameterstudie uitgevoerd, zowel voor debrekingsparameters zelf, als voor andere parameters die de simulatie beïnvloeden. Een standaardparameterset werd opgesteld die zeer goed in staat is om de proeven uitgevoerd door Battjes enJanssen (1978) te simuleren. Een uitgebreide reeks proeven werd uitgevoerd in de kleine en grotegolfgoot van de Afdeling Weg- en Waterbouw aan de Universiteit Gent. In de kleine golfgoot werdendrie verschillende bathymetrieën ingebouwd: een talud met uniforme helling, een talud met drempelen een drempel op een horizontale bodem. Deze bathymetrieën werden ook nagebouwd in hetnumerieke model, en dezelfde proeven werden uitgevoerd in de numerieke golfgoot. De resultatenbleken geen perfecte overeenstemming op te leveren met de experimenten: de langere golvenbleken in amplitude af te nemen, zelfs op een horizontale bodem. Dit uitte zich ook in verminderdeshoaling en latere breking dan voorspeld door het numerieke model. In de grote golfgoot werdenenkele proeven op het uniforme talud herhaald. De analyse van deze resultaten toonde aan dat hetwellicht schaaleffecten zijn die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het onverwachte gedrag van de golven inde kleine golfgoot.
