Up till now the nautical bottom has alwaysbeen defined using the characteristics of the mud layer. However, criteria based on ship behaviour mayresult in a more efficient definition of the nautical bottom. A mathematical model formulation for shipmanoeuvring in muddy areas, based on systematic captive model tests is proposed.
