The relative abundance of these acids suggests animal fats and vegetable oils as their sources. Concentrations of fatty acids ranged from 0.73 to 43.05 mg/l. Gas chromatographic analyses of hydrocarbons isolated from lipid extracts of effluents by column chromatography and thin layer chromatography indicate that petroleum hydrocarbons are discharged by 2 of the treatment plants studied. Hydrocarbon concentrations ranged from none detected for the effluent of one treatment plant to 16.2 mg/l for the effluent of another.
