The desiccation of the dune system has lead to a large decline of the wet dune slack plant species like <i>Schoenus nigricans</i> and <i>Parnassia palustris</i> and an increase of populations of <i>Calamagrostis epigejos</i>. At this moment plans are made for a rise of the water table in the near future. In this paper results are presented of both field observations and manipulative experiments with respect to the conditions required for a successful re-establishment of a characteristic dune slack vegetation. In a height gradient in a dune slack with four vegetation zones, the dehydrogenase activity was seasonal, with high activity in the winter. The activity was lowest on the dune ridge with <i>Ammophila arenaria</i> and highest in a zone with <i>Festuca rubra</i>. In the <i>Schoenus nigricans</i> zone the dehy-drogenase activity of the soil was low compared to the <i>F. rubra</i> and the <i>Rubus caesius</i> zone. In the laboratory, an incubation test with soil from the zone with <i>S. nigricans</i> increasing soil moisture and a negative correlation for nitrogen mineralisation. In a growth experiment the presence of <i>S. nigricans</i> reduced the growth of <i>C. epigejos</i> under wet conditions. If <i>C. epigejos</i> however, was growing in monoculture its growth was even better under wet conditions than under moist conditions. In presence of <i>S. nigricans</i> the dehydrogenase activity of the soil was not only low in the field but also in wet and moist soils of the growth experiment.
