Putative causal agents of this decline are considered with reference to records of the distribution of <i>L. loeselii</i> in south Wales over the past 100 years. Phytosociological studies suggest that the decline of <i>Liparis loeselii</i> in South Wales may be related to the development of tall high cover stands of <i>Salix repens</i> in association with the formation of thick bryophyte mats, dominated chiefly by <i>Calliergon cuspidatum</i>. The initial results of a detailed demographic monitoring programme suggest that one of the primary factors contributing to the decline of <i>Liparis loeselii</i> may be the loss of bare peat 'microsites' suitable for the establishment of seedlings.
