In view of coastal defence the beach and the adjacent front dune have to be considered as a unit. Three types can be distinguished: 1. the well supplied beach, 2. the balanced supplied beach and 3. the eroding beach. The effects of storm surge wave action and the conservation measures are described for each type. Type 2 needs the most concentrated conservation activities through construction of sand-trap fences and planting of vegetation. Persistent erosion of type 3 requires action by beach replenishment or even structural measures.
