La plus grande partie de la zone côtière se trouve environ 2 mètres en dessous du niveau d’une tempête annuelle (Verwaest et al., 2005). Les risques d’inondations sur le littoral belge sont attendus à augmenter suite à l’élévation du niveau de la mer et la fréquence de fortes tempêtes. Dans le cadre du projet CLIMAR une diversité d’effets secondaires sur les systèmes écologiques et socio-économiques a été identifiée et quantifiée.<br><Les conséquences les plus importantes des effets primaires des changements climatiques sont le nombre de victimes d’inondations et les dommages aux immeubles et infrastructures. Il peut y avoir encore d’autres conséquences directes et indirectes comme la détérioration des habitats côtiers et la biodiversité associée suite à l’érosion, ainsi que l’improductivité et le chômage temporel dans les zones inondées. Les effets primordiaux sont quantifiés au moyen de calculs de risques. Pour les différents scénarios de changements climatiques les frais de dommages, le nombre de victimes ainsi que l’étendue de l’inondation peuvent être estimé avec les modèles numériques. Dans un premier temps, les risques associés à une tempête extrême sous conditions actuelles de niveau de mer et d’ondes sont calculés. Une telle tempête correspond à une crue de +8m à Oostende. Une série de différentes modèles numériques est utilisée : un modèle pour calculer l’érosion de la plage et des dunes au cours de la tempête, un modèle pour estimer la croissance de la brèche en direction verticale et horizontale, un modèle pour évaluer la profondeur de l’eau, la vitesse ascensionnelle et la vitesse d’écoulement de l’inondation de la plaine côtière.
