Dit aangepast spuibeheer verschilt van het huidige spuibeheer in het feit dat de spuischuiven iets langer geopend blijven bij opkomend getij op zee, waardoor migrerende vissen de kans zouden krijgen om vanuit de Noordzee opwaarts te zwemmen.<br><br>Op verzoek van de afdeling Bovenschelde (WenZ) onderzocht WL de vraag naar de mogelijke effecten van een dergelijk aangepast spuibeheer op de zoutintrusie op de IJzer. Een verhoogde zoutintrusie kan namelijk verschillende negatieve gevolgen hebben voor het omliggende landgebruik.<br><br>Voorliggend rapport omschrijft de studie die door WL werd uitgevoerd. Via een vereenvoudigd 1-dimensionaal model, waarin waterbeweging gecombineerd werd met zouttransport, werden verschillende scenario’s van een aangepast spuibeheer onderzocht. Hierin varieerde zowel het aantal schuiven waarmee gespuid werd, als de openingshoogte van deze schuiven. In deze scenario’s werd specifiek gekeken naar het gedrag van het binnendringende zout. Daarnaast werden ook een aantal zogenaamde spoelscenario’s uitgewerkt om na te gaan hoe binnengedrongen zout kan teruggedrongen worden.<br><br>Uit de resultaten van de verschillende scenario’s kon geconcludeerd worden dat het aangepaste spuibeheer altijd resulteerde in een bepaalde zoutgradiënt op de IJzer. Afhankelijk van het scenario werd vastgesteld dat de zoutintrusie zich bij evenwichtstoestand maximaal tot Diksmuide uitstrekte. Uit de berekeningen bleek ook dat het zoutgehalte bij evenwicht in de buurt van Keiem (zo’n 10 km opwaarts de Ganzepoot) reeds relatief laag was (2 tot 3 ppt). Tot slot werd ook vastgesteld dat het spaarbekken in Nieuwpoort een belangrijke bufferende rol speelde tegen het optrekkende zout.
