These areas are: (1) northern terrigenous sediments with < 20% diatoms; (2) diatom-rich sediments with > 20% diatoms; (3) glacial marine remnant with diatoms; (4) Katmai volcanic ash; (5) Radiolaria-rich or biologically barren sediments; (6) <i>Globigerina</i>-rich sediments; (7) terrigenous sediments of outer shelf, slope and Great Trough, southern region. Color and benthonic foraminiferal characteristics are included in descriptions of the areas. Interrelated factors of terrigenous sediment supply, abundance of benthonic organisms, preservation of biogenous elements and plankton supply are evaluated.
