Oxygen determinations were carried out according to the method of Winkler with spectrofotometric end- point detection. Titrant was added with a motorburette which was built at the NIOZ. Gauging of the burette with mercury showed that small volumes could be measured with good reproducibility. In March a \"steady state\" existed with no nett production and only small nett light and gross production. In April a widespread <i>Phaeocystis</i>-bloom was found with high production of oxygen and carbon. The maximum in the velocity of oxygen production increased from day to day. This increase was related to nett carbon production in the previous day. An estimate of total phytoplankton biomass in the watercolumn was made with this relation. Oxygen concentrations at 5 m and 20 m depth showed a diurnal variation in respect to mean oxygen concentrations in the watercolumn. The coefficient of vertical diffusion was estimated from this diurnal variation.","AbstractOtherLang":"De primaire productie van zuurstof en organisch koolstof in de zuidelijke Bocht van de Noordzee is geschat aan de hand van de dagelijkse variatie in de zuurstofconcentratie. Zuurstof- bepalingen werden uitgevoerd volgens de methode van Winkler met spectrofotometrische bepaling van het eindpunt. Titrant werd toegevoegd met een motorburet die was gebouwd op het NIOZ. IJking met kwik toonde aan dat kleine volumes met goede reproduceerbaarheid worden afgepast. In maart en april 1980 werd gedurende enkele etmalen de zuurstofconcentratie van een watermassa gevolgd. In maart bleek een \"steady state\" te bestaan met weinig dagelijkse variatie in zuurstofconcentratie. Er was geen netto lichtperiode en bruto productie van zuurstof. In april was er op dezelfde plaats een wijdverspreide <i>Phaeocystis</i>-bloei die zich in de exponentiële fase bevond. Er werd een grote netto, netto lichtperiode en bruto productie van zuurstof gemeten. De dagelijkse variaties in de zuurstofconcentratie waren groot en de zuurstofconcentratie nam, evenals het maximum in de snelheid van zuurstofproductie en de netto, netto lichtperiode en bruto productie van zuurstof, van dag tot dag toe. Gegeven worden ook de productiewaarden voor koolstof zoals die berekend zijn uit de zuurstofproductiewaarden. In april werd een concentratieverschil in de verticaal gemeten waaruit een schatting is gemaakt van de verticale diffusiecoëfficient. De toename van het maximum in de productiesnelheidvan zuurstof bleek evenredig te zijn met de netto koolstofproductie in het voorafgaande etmaal.
