Primary production was measured by an adapted incubator C<sup>14</sup>-technique. Although the meaning of potential primary production is rather limited in determining the actual rate <i>in situ</i> it can at least be used in a relative way, showing the differences in productivity between certain parts of the area investigated. In this way it could be shown that there is a trend of increasing potential primary production towards the coast during August and May. This \"landmass\" effect indicates a shortage in nutrient supply, which is limiting the rate of primary production in most of the area. The spring bloom of phytoplankton in 1968 must have taken place during March and April. The weather conditions for plankton growth in these months, were excellent. This could be the reason that the potential primary production results of May 1968 were rather low. During November 1968 there was not an increase of potential primary production towards the coast, which is probably due to less favourable conditions in coastal water during this period of the year. The distribution pattern of potential primary production shows a dominant influence of the Rhine-Schelde estuary, which is illustrated by the results of February 1969.The pH of seawater in the area is greatly influenced by primary production. This resulted in exceptionally high pH data in August 1969.","AbstractOtherLang":"Gedurende de jaren 1968-1969 werd een begin gemaakt met het onderzoek naar primaire produktie in het oostelijke deel van de Zuidelijke Bocht van de Noordzee. Primaire produktie werd gemeten met de C<sup>14</sup>-methode door middel van een aangepaste incubatortechniek. De resultaten werden als potentiële primaire produktiewaarden gekenschetst. Alhoewel de betekenis van potentiële primaire produktie, voor de bepaling van <i>in situ</i> primaire produktie, tamelijk beperkt is, kunnen tenminste in relatieve zin, verschillen in productiviteit aangegeven worden tussen verschillende delen van het gebied. Op deze wijze kon worden aangetoond dat er een toename is in potentiële primaire produktie naar de kust toe. Dit effect duidt op een voedingsstoffentekort, dat in augustus, in het grootste deel van het onderzochte gebied, primaire produktie beperkte. De planktonbloei in het voorjaar moet reeds in maart en april 1968 hebben plaatsgevonden, gezien de goede weersomstandigheden gedurende deze maanden. Dit wordt dan ook als de oorzaak gezien voor de relatief lage primaire productieresultaten in mei 1968. In november 1968 was er geen kustwaartse toename van potentiële primaire produktie, hetgeen veroorzaakt kan zijn door voor primaire productie slechter wordende omstandigheden in het minder zoute water. Het distributiepatroon van potentiële primaire produktie toonde een dominerende invloed van het Rijn-Schelde estuarium, hetgeen vooral gedurende de februaritocht goed tot uiting kwam. De pH wordt sterk door primaire produktie beïnvloed.
