Increase in electrolyte concentration simultaneously cause an increase in the apparent haem-haem interaction. Again the effect of monovalent cations is smaller than that of divalent ones. The effects of electrolytes on <i>Arenicola</i> haemoglobine show radical differences than on the human pigment.The Bohr effect is measured at different electrolyte concentrations in order to apply pH corrections to the salt effect data.In order to interpret the above data physiologically the electrolyte regulation is studied. The internal concentrations are determined as a function of environmental salinities. <i>Arenicola marina</i> shows slight electrolyte regulation. The blood electrolyte concentration is lower than in the surrounding water, this difference increases with increasing salinity.The results are discussed comparatively, with special reference to salt effects of human Hb for which some qualitative and quantitative data are available.","AbstractOtherLang":"De effekten van elekrolyt-concentraties op de zuurstofbinding aan het haemoglobine van<i>Arenicola marina</i> L. werden bestudeerd.De zuurstofaffiniteit van Arenicola-Hb neemt toe bij toenemende elektrolyt-concentratie. Toename van de elktrolyt-concentratie veroorzaakt bovendien een toename van de haem-haem interactie; éénwaardige kationen hebben een geringer effect op Hill's interactie constante n, dan tweewaardige kationen. De effekten van elektrolyten op de zuurstofbinding aan het haemoglobine van <i>Arenicola marina</i> L. blijken te verschillen van de zouteffekten op menselijke Hb.Het Bohr-effekt werd gemeten om pH correcties toe te kunnen passen op Hb-zuurstofevenwichten, bij verschillende elektrolyt-concentraties.Om de resultaten van het onderzoek te kunnen interpreteren in termen van de fysiologische betekenis van de zouteffekten in vivo, zijn een aantal adaptatieexperimenten gedaan. Hierbij werd de interne elektrolyt-concentratie van <i>Arenicola</i> bij verschillende saliniteiten van het milieu gemeten. <i>Arenicola marina</i> vertoont geringe elektrolytregulatie.
