Phosphate concentrations were in general much higher than in the North Sea. Highest concentrations occur in summer in the inner parts as a result of accumulation and mineralisation of organic material. In winter differences are small. Phosphate concentrations increased 3x since 1950 parallel to a similar increase in the river Rhine. Over the same period the suspended matter, measured by its P contents, doubled. Very low phosphate values are only found in Spring and Summer between the islands Vlieland and Terschelling where phosphorus probably becomes limiting for plankton growth.","AbstractOtherLang":"Gedurende de periode juli 1970 tot juli 1971 werden in de Waddenzee van Den Helder tot in de Eems op 64 stations de fosforconcentraties gemeten. De waarnemingen hadden betrekking op zowel fosfaat (PO<sub>4</sub>-P) als opgeloste organische (P<sub>org</sub> en zwevende fosfor (P<sub>zw</sub>). Het fosfaatgehalte is in het algemeen aanzienlijk hoger dan in de Noordzee. De hoogste concentraties worden in de zomer in het binnenste deel op de wantijen aangetroffen (tot 4 µgr.at P/1). Dit hangt samen met het feit dat dan veel organische stof afkomstig uit de Noordzee op die plaatsen wordt geaccumuleerd en vervolgens gemineraliseerd. Deze mineralisatie is ook te meten aan een lager fosforgehalte in het zwevende materiaal. In de winter zijn de verschillen tussen Waddenzee en Noordzee daarentegen gering. Vergeleken met 1950 is het fosfaatgehalte in de westelijke Waddenzee verdrievoudigd (van 0,5 tot 1,4 µgr.at P/1) corresponderend met een verdrievoudiging van de concentratie in het Rijnwater gedurende dezelfde periode. Over de gehele Waddenzee is in dezelfde tijd het gehalte aan P<sub>zw</sub> dus aan organische stof, verdubbeld. Zeer lage fosfaatwaarden komen in het voorjaar en de zomer alleen voor in het zeegat van het Vlie, zodat waarschijnlijk alleen in dat gebied fosfor beperkend is voor de planktongroei. In het noordelijke IJsselmeer is het fosfaatgehalte sinds 1950 gestegen van gemiddeld 0,3 tot 0,7 µgr.at P/1.
